Forever

BY CAROLE NICHOLS

She stands, poised, arms outstretched,
Leaning over the edge of the precipice,
Held only by the buffeting wind,
Not knowing when it will release.
Only knowing that when she falls,
It will be forever.

And her heart flutters like a leaf,
Torn from the safety of it's home,
To the gossimer strings of a spider's web,
To be held trembling, warmed only by the sun,
Nurtured only by the morning dew,
Resting on a silken bed.

Yet she raises her face to the heavens,
Sending a prayer to lips of the wind,
Let me fly, let me soar, let me fall,
I want my journey to begin.
For she knows that when she falls,
It will be forever.
