Leaving My Heart

BY CAROLE NICHOLS

My heart was so hard to leave,
As I drove into the morning sun;
Protected and shielded for so long,
I can't believe what you have done.

I wasn't supposed to care so much,
I couldn't believe that love was real;
Like waves that coat the endless sand,
You surrounded my heart, made me feel.

So I left my heart and drove away,
Even though you answered my every need;
To carry it now would be too much to bear,
I leave it with you...don't let it bleed.

I carry with me the feel of your hands,
Warm as the sun that touches me now;
And I hear the sweet words you spoke,
Surpassing the beauty of birdsong, somehow.

I take with me the taste of your lips,
The nectar more potent than wine;
Each mile I travel, the stronger the pull,
Of the heart I'm leaving behind.

It calls me back to linger awhile,
In your arms, as a lover and friend;
Yet there are no tears, for I left my heart,
Care for it well till I see you again.
