When First I Came to Love
BY CAROLE NICHOLS
When first I came to love,
I remember how it looked and felt,
How vivid the taste and smell.
Twas like the sun did grace the world
With it's warm, golden glow;
Making the blues deeper,
The greens more vibrant,
The browns richer,
All because I came to love.
And wrapping my arms about myself
Had the feel of you,
For you were all over me and in me,
In all things, I saw you there.
I would call your sweet name,
And the halls gave answer,
When first I came to love.
There was no part of my world,
Where you did not exist;
No part of me where you did not abide,
And in the stillness of the night,
The breeze carried the scent of you
To soothe my aching soul,
When first I came to love.
I was awash in an endless sea
Of dreams and promises,
Enchanted by the idea
Of forever by your side.
So that now,
When I have come to love again
It is like coming home.
