What I Wouldn't Give

BY CAROLE NICHOLS

Who wounded you so long ago,
So deeply you still feel the pain;
Who took away all your dreams,
And left you like a creature slain.

Who made you feel so unworthy,
To receive my love, strong and true,
Who caused to to hang your head in shame,
When I offer my friendship to you.

I'd give you my heart so easily,
If you'd take it as your shield;
Let it surround your wounded one,
Until it's whole and fully healed.

I'd give you a bright smile,
If you'd raise your head to catch the sun;
And see the truth that lies in my eyes,
For me, you are the only one.

I'd give my hand to pull you close,
If you'd just reach out and take it;
Walk with me down a brand new path,
If it's not there, then we'll make it.

But I wouldn't give you cause to doubt,
For you feel so perfect to me;
I'd wrap you in such a blanket of love,
It wouldn't take long for you to see.

I wouldn't give you misery or sorrow,
Or give you reason to ever regret;
Our time can be now if you trust in me,
I'll make you thankful that we met.
