Sunset on the Lake
BY CAROLE NICHOLS
The sky turns flame with the setting sun,
Catching the world and the clouds on fire,
Reflecting rich colors of red and gold,
Bathing us here in our lover's bier.
White sails now tinted on water once blue,
Glow amid a backdrop of darkening green;
The birds grow quiet in their hidden nests,
As the evening takes on a romantic sheen.
We lie here entwined in the soft tufted glade,
Counting the stars as they begin to show;
Shadows creep in to form a warm curtain,
And crickets serenade us, soft and low.
The world is a perfect place, here, tonight;
Where love lives and peace does abide,
On the bank of the lake at the end of day,
In the setting sun with you by my side.
