Camelot is Gone

BY CAROLE NICHOLS

I saw him standing there,
Solemn as the world that day,
Saluting a fallen uncrowned king;
As they took his father away.

I watched him as he lived his life,
Grew and tried to make a place,
And he grew into a charming prince;
He walked among us with such grace.

It seems as if we dreamed a dream,
Where the prince would someday rule;
Camelot seemed just a blink away,
Oh, just let him finish school.

But time passed and the prince was grown,
Living his life as he wanted it to be;
He chose his path and followed it,
For there are no kings in the land of the free.

My heart hurts for this family of tragedy,
And Camelot is gone, once more for a age;
Into the sea and into the mist,
History must close another page.

Yet I'll remember the boy who saluted,
Forever he's etched in my memory clear;
The charming young prince, untried, who died;
So far from land, and yet, so near.
